I’m a writer, civil liberties advocate, online organizer, and facilitator.
Some key facts about me:
- I’m currently the president of the board of directors of Freedom of the Press Foundation, a nonprofit I helped found in 2012.
- I served as the activism director for the Electronic Frontier Foundation for 8 years then as Chief Program Officer of EFF for another 3, and now I’m an outside Special Advisor.
- I’m in the process of publishing a book about how financial companies influence speech and democracy by closing the accounts of certain speakers. The book is called Transaction Denied and you can find it in bookstores in early 2026.
- I’m passionate about press freedom, government transparency, financial inclusion, and human rights.
- I run strategy and team-building retreats for mission-driven organizations through my consulting organization, Groundwork.
- I serve on the board of the Filecoin Foundation for the Decentralized Web to help support decentralizing our technological world.
- I run. And sometimes backpack long distances.
This blog is designed to be a home for a mishmash of various topics that I find interesting—from backpacking to civil liberties, from nonprofit management to running, from feminism to online advocacy. I wanted a digital home to collect all the things I was working on and thinking about, and so I’m putting this up even though I recognize some of these topics may lack obvious connections.

Note that I put this blog up on October 14, 2016. Anything that predates that was published someplace else originally, and I brought over a copy for archival purposes.
